Power Metal Box Set Bargain Roundup
I’m a big fan of these Original Album Series box sets. Sure the packaging is flimsy, but you really do get a lot of bang for the buck. A few really good power metal sets just hit the market, so I thought I’d do a quick roundup.
Angra
These guys helped start the whole progressive/power metal scene, and this set collects their entire run with vocalist Andre Matos. You get Angels Cry, the epic Holy Land, the Freedom Call EP, Holy Live and Fireworks. Basically 3.5 studio albums and a live album. This set would be worth the price for Angels Cry and Holy Land alone. Highest recommendation.
Freedom Call
No one does shiny happy power metal like Freedom Call, and this set is a perfect introduction. You get two more recent albums – Legend of the Shadowking and Land of the Crimson Dawn, the two-disc Live in Hellvetia set and the 18-track Ages of Light best of collection that runs through their classic early material. Five studio albums would have been ideal, but for the price this is a great way to discover Freedom Call.
Virgin Steele
This may be the most loaded set of the bunch. It comes with five classic albums from this US power metal band: Noble Savage, Age of Consent, Life Among the Ruins, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell Part One and The Marriage of Heaven and Hell Part Two. As if that wasn’t enough, these are all remastered albums that are loaded with bonus tracks. I really wish I had seen this before buying the individual reissues.
Anvil
Oh, and there’s also an Anvil set. Anvil is so not my thing, but if you dig them, this is a hell of a bargain.
Enjoy!
